Books and eReading Committed to reading, regardless of the format, Indigo is Canada's largest book retailer and in 2009, created and launched the global eReading service, Kobo. With one of the largest eReading catalogues in the world, Kobo has since driven its membership to over 6 million readers in 100 countries. In November 2011, after building incredible global awareness and launching a suite of eReading devices designed by booklovers for booklovers, Indigo agreed to the sale of Kobo to Rakuten Inc., one of the world's leading internet service companies, for US$315 million. Indigo received US$146 million from the proceeds of the sale, which closed in January of 2012. Gifts and Lifestyle Indigo is a one-stop destination for gifts to touch the heart, mind and soul. The Company continues to develop and expand its proprietary gift and lifestyle merchandise as part of its focus to provide customers with increasingly meaningful and life enriching merchandise while improving operating margins. To support this initiative, Indigo opened a new design office in New York which develops proprietary merchandise exclusively for Indigo and is available both in-store at all large format locations and online at indigo.ca.
